Loyalty wins championships
Talent is key, but loyalty wins championships.
It is a great lesson on leadership to hear the coaches at SEC media days talk about how to win, manage a team, in the age of the transfer portal. They never stress the x’s and o’s, or even the talent. Instead, they consistently stress the importance of the culture, building unity.
With new players shuffling in each year, the coaches talk about the importance of the players that remained, the core, the foundation of the team. The talent of the new players is critical, of course, but it all falls apart if there isn’t a loyal base of players as the foundation.
Each year, a college football team has about 6 months to unify a team. As new players come in, they learn the culture, the expectations, the values from the original team. Day by day, they learn the depth of the loyalty through the eyes of those that have been on the journey. Without the core, there is no glue to build the program, as the core contains the secret ingredient to unity, loyalty.
Regardless of the talent, a team doesn’t win without unity. Unity is naturally created by loyalty. And, loyalty doesn’t exist without trust.
Impact others today by building unity, loyalty, and trust, a three-strand cord that can’t be broken. As a mentor used to say, “you are either building it up or tearing it down.”
