What is the truth?

As I watched the election tickers, the probability meters, the betting odds, as I listened to the pundits, the candidates, the campaign managers, it was a confusing evening. Everyone had their own version of the truth. You can choose a side and vehemently agree, but, at the end of the day, who is to say it is true? Watching the world today, you just don’t know. There seems to be no truth, on any issue.

What is absolute truth? I watched a video once that showcased a number of people around the United States attempting to answer this question. As you can imagine, tons of radically different answers were received. Many of the interviewees pondered for a while before stringing random thoughts together that led nowhere.

I saw a tattoo once that boldly declared, There is no absolute truth. What if this is the answer? What if truth is individual to each person—each person is left to define what truth is, who God is, what is wrong and right, and how one should live their life? In a society like this, there would be chaos, confusion, no order. We would chase money, power, sports, and beauty, and we would try to live forever. Instability, stress, fear, and lack of trust would reign. Laws would not be concrete, as different systems of truth would make regulations of the land obsolete. Does all of this sound eerily familiar?

I suppose truth is the ultimate, perpetual battle with mankind.

It is interesting that on Thursday night at the Last Supper with his 12 disciples, like always, Jesus focused on truth. All chaos is about to break loose after this dinner, as Jesus is about to be arrested and hung on a cross. Jesus knew it, and he wanted to provide stability.

Absolute truth the steadies the ship. Knowing, without a shadow of doubt, that someone has control of the crazy world that we live in provides an anchor.

So, on that Thursday night, as chaos is about to ensue, Jesus says, “Do not let your heart be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.”

There is the truth found in the Bible. Looking anywhere else will lead to disappointment and emptiness. Everyone else has a little world in them, especially this writer.
