Perfection is a trap

Perfect doesn’t exist.

In fact, perfect is a mirage. We know this to be true, but, nevertheless we run toward the light of perfection.

The perfect job, title, or salary doesn’t exist. The belief is that the dream position with the dream income and the dream title will bring happiness. But, arrival reveals the gaps, the hidden pressures, the calendar that overflows, the pressure of delivery, the relational debt that is accumulated because of the lack of time.

The perfect marriage never was. Marriage brings two imperfect people together. There are gaps in communication and expectation. Pressures of the world cause friction. Misses happen regularly. The journey doesn’t play out as expected.

The perfect family is a fallacy. Of course, there are seasons of perfection, but every family member has an individual journey. And, every journey has seasons of highs and lows, the good and the bad. The longer the journey, the more unforecasted storms. Every individual in the family experiences sun and rain.

So, why are we pulled to perfection? Comparisons.

The dream of perfection would not exist without comparisons.

Comparisons create a glamour shot. We get the studio picture of a point in time, the picture that one desires to be shown. And, the watching individual is left with that imprint of perfection in their mind, that dream to chase, that unfulfilled gap. The glamour shot is emphasized in the mind. The job, the title, the person, the family, the marriage, the family appears to be consistent perfection.

But, perfection doesn’t exist.

The recognition that perfection doesn’t exist naturally creates fulfillment in the present.

When one recognizes that perfect doesn’t exist, the race of life slows. You don’t have to keep up. It is okay.

When you recognize that perfect is a fallacy, perfection is not expected, and grace is at the tip of your tongue. Grace is given to other people, and, most importantly, to yourself. The charitable assumption is made.

When you recognize that perfect is a lie, joy in the journey is found. Comparisons stop. Other people are no longer the barometer, the measuring stick in life.

Take the pressure off today. Recognize perfect doesn’t exist. Run your race or, as a friend says, enjoy your hike.

Let gratitude overcome the perfection trap. And, help others recognize the trap.

Impact others. Live generously.
