Values Provide Stability

Character is often confused with personality, but they’re not the same. Personality is your predisposition, your basic instincts for how to think, feel, and act. Character is your capacity to prioritize your values over your instincts.” Adam Grant in Hidden Potential

It is a gift to recognize the seasons of weather.

We prepare for the change. We know the season will come, when it will come, how long it will last. We look forward with eagerness and optimism.

The stability of predictable weather seasons provides time for preparation.

But the seasons of life aren’t quite as predictable.

Businesses will go through seasons. There will be times of profit, times of scarcity, times that require endurance.

Teams will go through periods of winning seasons that seem like they will last forever. But the valleys will come. Change is inevitable.

Marriages will go through green pastures and difficult storms. Personal health will have a high tide and a low tide. A career will be a roller coaster of high seasons and low seasons.

The emotions of each season can wreak havoc.

The winning season leads to the idea that it will last forever. The profits will continue. The perfect team will never change. The performance will remain at the peak. The joy and peace of mind that I feel today will be perpetual. Complacency sets in.

The tough season can lead to fear and anxiety. It can lead to regret and remorse, the idea that you caused the season. Difficult seasons can lead to desperation, thoughts that you have lost control.

But emotions are the shallowest part of our being.

Through each season, let values be your north star.

Your values are what you stand for at your core, who you are in the quiet of the room.

Values can be a guide through the seasons.

During the seasons of plenty, values can keep you grounded. During seasons of scarcity, values can give you room for optimism. Values can give you purpose in the middle of the storm. Values can help you capitalize on the times of peace, avoiding complacency.

Although we never know when the seasons will come and go in life, just like for the weather seasons, we can prepare. We can know our values. We can have our values settled in our souls prior to the journey.

Because, ultimately, values will produce a consistency of life that leaves a legacy.

Reset your emotions; remember your values. A daily battle.
