Who is God?

“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” A.W. Tozer

Interesting quote. What Tozer is saying is that what we think about God defines us. What we think about God directs our life. Who we think God is dictates our actions, our every move.

If one believes there is no God, the life is naturally lived as if there is no God. If one defines God themselves, the life is directed by the definition that they made. If one clings to the words of a friend or a church for the definition, the life will be patterned after the words of another person.

A life is different depending on the answer to the question “who is God?”

So, who is God?

The world is full of man-made definitions, partial truths. Definitions that emphasize certain qualities and assume certain actions based on these qualities.

God’s name seems to be prominently on display in the world today.

Recently, I heard a popular talk show host definitely define God or at least her definition of Him. We regularly hear politicians imply an answer to “who is God” by using His name to rally people. If one has no answer to the question “who is God,” there is a culture to define Him for them. Follow the leader.

The Bible gives us a warning.

Know His name “so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” Ephesians 4:14

People are tossed to and fro because they can not rightly answer the question, “who is God?”

And, I by no means am pointing a finger at others.

Personally, I believe my definition of God has changed over the years, through different seasons. I created my own definition, essentially what I wanted Him to be like. I was tossed “to and fro.”

In Romans, the Bible says that the people “began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like.” Then, “God abandoned them to do whatever shameful things their hearts desired.” (1:21-24)

Whatever their hearts desired.

That is a dangerous place, doing whatever your heart desires with whatever definition of God you come up with.

One can twist the definition of God to emphasize His love. He is absolutely pure love, but He defines love. In fact, pick a quality, even grace, and one can enter into dangerous territory if the definition of God’s grace is from man.

So, how do you rightly, humbly answer the question “who is God?”

Read the one book this is in almost every house today, the Bible. When you humbly, openly, submissively read Scripture, the definition of God is lifted off the pages.

A mind shift takes place when one answers the question “who is God” using God’s definition only found in Scripture. Not from man, but from Him. The Author.

The answer to the question, “who is God” is right before us. Maybe the answer hurts, convicts, so we avoid. I certainly did.

Over 100 years ago, Tozer said that one’s personal definition of God is the most important thing about them. The same is true today.

So, “who is God?” Answer that for yourself and hold on to the Anchor.
