Life is hard, don’t make it more difficult.

For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:6-7

Paul is writing to his mentee Timothy. Paul knows Timothy believes and follows God. But, notice what Paul says to him. “Fan into flame” what is already with you. If you do not “fan into flame” the gift, you will be afraid and lack love and self-control.

The gift of God’s Spirit that we are given through faith can remain dormant. The key to bringing it to life is obedience.

Obedience to God is not a salvation issue.

This is settled behind what He tells us repeatedly. Believe on the Lord Jesus and you will be saved (Acts 16:31).

Obedience is a submission issue.

To obey, we have to submit. And, submission is a life-long battle. Either my way or God’s way.

My whole life, I have fought and fought against God. Within my mind, there is perpetual battle. This battle will continue until I die.

For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do. (Galatians 5:17)

Obedience does not move us closer to God. God is already with us.

Rather, obedience is a gift to us that we refuse over and over.

Obedience to God’s principles for life leads to peace, joy, hope, prosperity (not the money kind), the love of others.

God’s Word lays out the gift of obedience, giving us clear, simple principles to follow that lead to life. We just have to read them, know them.

Life is hard no matter who you are.

Why not capture the gift of obedience?

Here’s an easy start. Today, love others as you want to be loved. Put the focus on others. You will have a different day if you practice this principle.
