Care leaves a legacy.

Just landing in Chicago, the time was 9:30 with my next flight at 9:45. Glancing at my watch, I had a 13 minute “walk” to my gate.

I took off in a dead sprint.

Approaching the gate at 9:40, I saw the door shut. Hope was gone.

But, something different happened. I saw excellence.

The gate agent saw my despair and went into action. This was not her first rodeo.

She quickly printed a luggage tag in case there was no luggage room on the plane. Forget the boarding pass. She asked for my id, as the scanner was off. She opened the door, took off running down the ramp, screaming “don’t close the door.”

I like to think she skipped all procedures and process and made it happen.

Despite my seat neighbor giving me a disgusted look because she lost personal space, I made the flight.

In my job, I am regularly asked what makes Harvest Group different.

I talk about our connected service, our people and talent, our proprietary tech, our relationships in the market. All that is true but one thing is always a difference maker in today’s market.

We care. We say, “we wear the jersey of our clients.” Our values lead us to care.

The longer I live, the more I realize that care is the difference. We all want to do life, we want to work with someone who cares.

We want our family to care, our friends to care, our kids to care, our company to care, our church to care. The doctor, the teacher, the waiter, we simply want them to care.

That gate agent cared. The odds of me ever seeing her again are slim. The odds of her receiving any notoriety from that act is probably not happening.

But, she cared enough to forsake all and make it happen for a guy she would never see again.

Now, a goal in my life is to find out her name. That type of service demands to be celebrated.

It isn’t about money or title or influence. Those things will leave an empty legacy.

It is about the care of people, your job, your family, your work. That is the difference. That leaves a legacy.
