Unite away from the table.
Jim: Mike, are you familiar with the saying “Perfect is the enemy of good”?
Mike: Good enough is the enemy of humanity.
To be debated, right? Those quotes are from the movie Blackberry.
I can hear the debate around a group of leaders that I am humbled to work with each day. Half the table would be super proactive, let’s make it happen. The other half would slow down, think, make sure the systems are in place before executing.
If the team is composed of all “run” personalities, you are at risk of destroying the team, the culture. If contemplated too long, the competition will blow by you.
The key is to create unity away from the table, after the discussion. Each person will leave the table and unify or divide.
The tendency is to create division. Be the one who unifies.
Avoid the negative talk about others, the “us against them” positioning, the cutting remarks after you leave the table. Words divide, kill the culture.
When different personalities with different strengths listen to each other, respect each other, have each other’s back, a culture is built and the team is unified behind a strategy.
This is a great model for a business, a team, a marriage, a family. Listen, respect, and honor all at the table and when you leave the table.
Two are better than one; a strand of three cords is not easily broken.
