The Gift of the Remnant
Unless the Lord Almighty had left us some survivors, we would have become like Sodom, we would have been like Gomorrah. Isaiah 1:9
The prophet Isaiah left these words in about 700 BC, pointing to the gift of the “survivors” or, as the Bible sometimes says, the “remnant.” These are the small number of people who have faith in God, the people who carry on the message of faith.
Isaiah says that were it not for the survivors, the nation would have been like Sodom and Gomorrah. Sodom and Gomorrah were completely destroyed, all the people died because of their wickedness. You can read about the story in Genesis 19.
The descendants, the remnant, are a gift from God to the people. And, these descendants had faith to pass on. They had a message of salvation to pass on. In the Bible, the message is the gospel, the reason we celebrate Christmas.
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:14-16
As you celebrate Christmas, amidst the parties and the gifts, consider the thought of being part of the remnant. What a gift. Just as one does not put a lamp under a basket, one can’t keep this gift to themselves. Impact others as you “let your light shine, giving glory to God.”
Impact others. Live generously.
