It Just Is

Romans 9:16 – He does not, therefore, depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.

God’s mercy. Tough to comprehend. The thought that one is simply accepted does not fit into our mindset, especially in the US.

The easiest way for me to understand this is to look at the relationship I have with my kids. My children don’t need to earn my love. It is, and it will always be. There is a deep love that they will never understand until they have children.

But, we aren’t programmed to think like this. We keep score. We naturally compare ourselves to others. In our youth, we are taught to measure up as we compete in athletics, education, or simply world-defined beauty. As we grow up, we compete with money, material possessions, power, experiences, and much, much more. We have created great comparison tools, like social media from Facebook to LinkedIn, to help make the comparisons a bit easier.

Today, remove the pressure. Take the weight off your shoulders. Relish in the truth that God accepts. His mercy is new every day. You don’t have to run the race. You don’t have to keep score. You don’t have to compare yourself to others. Just look up. This is why we celebrate Christmas, after all.

Romans 8:38 – For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Impact others. Live generously.
