Hope Sustains
“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”
Viktor Frankl wrote this in Man’s Search for Meaning, describing how he was able to survive a Nazi concentration camp for three years. The only way to survive each day was to hold on to the hope for the future.
One’s why for living provides hope for the future. And hope sustains.
In times of clarity, hope provides motivation.
Hope provides an internal fire, a desire to reach that which is hoped for.
Hope gives us a picture of what life, business, family will be.
Hope is that feeling you have after writing a well thought out strategy or plan.
Hope is fuel for the soul, the human spirit.
In the valley, hope provides security.
Hope provides light when darkness abounds.
Hope gives meaning to the valley.
Hope can direct the mind when the body fails.
Hope cannot be taken away in the midst of suffering.
Hope provides stabilization in life.
Hope is belief that the future will be better than the present. Hope is the foundation of a why, a vision.
Achieving goals is temporary. If a company achieves goals, the race is finished. But vision, the why of a company, sustains. The why is the future hope that is ultimately, unachievable. The why, the hope, keeps the motor running.
Likewise, an individual vision or why provides perpetual hope. The destination is never truly reached. Peaks and valleys will come, but hope provides stability on the journey. Money, retirement, promotions, material things, may bring short term happiness from the achievement but never sustainable joy. Hope of the future brings consistent peace.
The journey of life can cause one to lose hope. Fires arise. Obstacles come out of nowhere. Health declines. Death happens. Expectations are missed. Things didn’t turn out as one envisioned. The best developed plan fails. People let you down.
Hope is the one thing that sits on top of situations, sustaining us on the journey.
Make sure your hope, your why, your vision, is built for the journey.
It is worth the deep work to clearly define it for your company, your life, and your family.
Where is your hope today?
Impact others. Live generously.
We have hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. Hebrews 6:19
