Why?
Fulfillment is found in answering your “why.”
When Nick Saban, former University of Alabama football coach, testified on Capitol Hill in 2024, he clearly articulated that he retired from football because his “why” was not met in the coaching profession anymore. In his mind, the profession had moved from a focus on relationships and player development to a focus on money.
My point is not to create a debate on Saban or the NIL (name, image and likeness) system but rather to point out a deep question we all need to struggle with.
Why?
Do we do what we do for money? This “why” will not fulfill. Power or title? No fulfillment. Do we do what we do for security or a safety net? No lasting joy. Success or ego? Empty. Retirement? Fulfillment will not be found here. I have heard too many stories.
All of these things may provide temporary fulfillment. Maybe, but definitely not long term. The list of testimonies that are similar to Saban’s is long, from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs to retired NFL quarterback Tom Brady.
As Simon Sinek says, “why” is a great question to wrestle with in life.
If you wrestle with your “why,” look beyond the business to people. Reframe your mindset.
Maybe you wake up with the pressure of a sales number, or the big meeting, or the long task list. Whenever the world presses in, reframe your mindset, and remember why you are doing what you do.
Make your “why” always be about people, about others, about your team, about your family. This “why” will fuel you to accomplish great things, not for personal glory but for others.
And there was one other nugget in the Saban testimony. He said his wife pointed out the issue in the coaching profession. She recognized that Saban’s “why” was no longer being met.
Most times, those closest to us are able to clearly see things that are driving us. They understand our true “why” more than we do.
Never underestimate the voice of a spouse or a friend. They can see our blind spots. What a treasure.
