Move Slowly

Move through the crowd slowly.

I heard a testimony from a teacher about one of his mentors, a man who left a legacy of impacting others. The teacher said the one thing that struck him about his mentor was the way he “moved through the crowd slowly.” It took him forever to move through a crowded room. When in a conversation or when people walked up to him, he stopped, listened, and entered their world. He was completely present, with compassion for people. He always had time to connect.

What a great way to do life, “moving through the crowd slowly.”

Practically, “moving through the crowd slowly” might mean grabbing that coffee with a friend on a week that is too busy. Maybe pausing, making that phone call to someone who came to mind. Taking your spouse to dinner for reconnection. Stopping and being with your child in the moment. “Moving through the crowd slowly” means focusing on others versus yourself.

May the tasks at hand not become greater than the people involved. May we always have an ear open to listen with compassion, connect, and be in the conversation.

Today, let the request for the conversation or the phone call that interrupts be the prompt to slow down and listen.

Let our legacy be one of “moving through the crowd slowly.”

May we decrease, and God increase.
