Does the world shake you?

Of course it does.

Life is perpetually shaking for everyone.

With all going on internationally, in the US, and personally, in our lives, the sea is never smooth sailing in all areas. It is a lie to think that, for some, the world is not perpetually shaking. We are all in a boat of perpetually rocky water.

As King Solomon said, “there is nothing new under the sun.”

The pages of Scripture drip with lives that are perpetually shaking. The greatest history book ever written details a world that is never at peace. Constant division and wars. Pick any person in the Bible, read about their life, and you will see a journey of perpetual shaking.

In the midst of the chaos, however, you have the greatest promise in the Bible. He is with you.

This promise was the gift that people long ago claimed to make it through the journey. Were it not for this promise, they had no anchor.

“..because He is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” Psalm 16:8

King David coined these words. The valiant leader “after God’s own heart.” The one that defeated Goliath as a teenager. Also, the one that committed adultery and then murdered the husband. David grieved deeply over these actions. Through it all, David clung to a promise. God was at his right hand. He would not leave him.

And he said to him, “If your presence will not go with me, do not bring us up from here.” Exodus 33:!5

Moses, arguably the greatest leader who ever walked on earth, would not lead the people without God’s presence. We see Moses repeatedly beg for God’s presence. He had seen God move with the plagues in Egypt, the Red Sea, manna, water from the rock, and Moses knew that he could not go on the journey of life without Him.

After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?”

Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.” John 6:66-69

Peter knew a perpetually shaking world. As a fisherman of the sea, he worked hard day and night. He was only as good as his last catch. Life was a roller coaster. But, then he met Jesus. His presence changed his life. Where else would he go?

Before Jesus brutally died on the cross, He promised the perpetual gift of His presence in the form of the Helper, the Holy Spirit. He went on to say that the world would offer no peace, but His presence would bring peace.

After His resurrection, as further confirmation and comfort for the disciples, Jesus repeated the promise.

“…and I am with you always, even until the end of the world.” Matthew 28:20

We, too, have the gift of His Presence.

Claim the promise.

Like David, remind yourself that He is at your right hand.

His presence is the only thing that can bring comfort in a world that is perpetually shaking. His presence is the only thing that can bring peace, not money, power, popularity, friends, or anything in this world. His presence.

In turmoil, when the sea is rough, we cry in desperation for the presence of God. However, the more powerful cry is to claim what He has already promised.

“I am with you.”

This promise quiets the storm, stills the water. The confusion and pain may remain, but those are emotions. Below the emotions, there is a truth, a foundation, that stands forever.

“We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul…” Hebrews 6:19
