Service and humility travel together.
“Humility means you love serving more than you crave leading.” Paul David Tripp
There is a connection between service and humility. The definition of service isn’t complete without including the word humility. One can’t serve without humility.
As a young Walmart Analyst at Schering-Plough , I was a bit disgruntled, really lacked humility. I went to our VP, who I respected a ton and had a great relationship with. Telling him that I was ready for an Account Manager position and was considering leaving the company, he passionately dropped the following on me.
“Mike, just serve others and the title and money will come.” Tom Moeller
Notice the connection between service and humility. They travel together. Tom could say that because I saw that in his life, in his leadership. That quote shaped my career. Thanks, Tom.
Service is the hidden trait that is only seen from observation. It is never displayed in the meeting room. Service shown only when the lights are on lacks humility.
If your company is in the service business (we all are), look for humility in the next interview. Without humility, there will be no true service, only service for political gains. And, this type of “service” will divide the culture.
If you wake up this morning feeling like the purpose meter is low in your life, just serve. Serve when no one is watching.
And, perhaps the greatest impact of service is to the one serving. Service is fuel for the soul.
Just serve today. Others will be impacted.
Impact others. Live generously.
