Look Back for Encouragement

Ever feel like you are not up to the leadership position or task to which you have been called?

Moses was called to a leadership position, seemingly out of nowhere. His resume was light, full of gaps. He was full of fear, questions, using every excuse in the book to get out of the mission. He was not a good speaker, and the people wouldn’t follow him. In his mind, there was no way he could succeed.

Fast forward forty years. After the death of Moses, Joshua was handed the baton. His mission was to lead the one million-plus people into military battle in an occupied land. If there was ever one who should have doubt, it was Joshua.

But Joshua had a different response. He immediately moved into strategic planning. There was no doubt, no fear, no questions. He jumped into the position and dived into action.

The difference in the two responses can be seen in their prior journeys. Moses was new to leadership. He did not have the experience of a prior journey. However, when Joshua stepped up, he had been steadfastly following Moses as his assistant.

Joshua had witnessed all that had taken place on the forty-year journey. He saw the victories and the losses. He had seen people divide and ask Moses to step down as the leader. Joshua had seen miracles transpire when there shouldn’t have been a way.

His confidence was built on his past journey. He had faith for the future because of what he had seen in the past.

In the moment, we tend to forget the biggest asset we have. Remembering our prior journey. We doubt the future because we forget the past.

When you doubt your leadership ability or lack confidence in your ability to accomplish the job at hand, purposely lean in. Take the step of faith.
