Daily steps prevent drift
The risk of anything great in life is the drift.
Just as the ocean current slowly moves one down the beach from where one originally entered the water, the same is true in life.
Life has a slow drift.
The difference is that in the ocean, we expect the drift. We know the drift will happen. We are aware.
The tendency in life is to ignore the drift. Maybe it comes from the lack of belief that a drift happens. Maybe we are over-confident in ourselves, our ability to never let the drift impact our lives.
Whatever the case, the door is left open for the drift. Before you know it, you are way down beach. Life’s journey has you on a path you never expected or wanted.
How do you battle the drift?
Daily steps.
To accomplish anything worthwhile, daily discipline is required. It doesn’t just happen.
A great strategy has rails, lanes of focus, a clearly defined playing field providing direction on where the business is heading. The drift causes one to focus on the shiny new object outside of the area of expertise. Master of many, expert of none.
An individual life purpose, a “why,” gives one a North Star, a purpose for living, motivation for the day. The drift causes one to float through life without purpose and meaning causing life to be fruitless.
A balanced life between work and family takes daily effort, purposeful daily calendar management, continual effort. The worries of business take away one’s attention and intentionality, causing drift. Time is lost.
A meaningful marriage takes daily intentionality. Impactful parenting takes time each day. Faith requires daily steps, brick by brick the house is built. Daily unreasonable customer service provides future business growth.
Coach Nick Saban said it this way. “Even when you don’t feel like it, do the things you need to do today to achieve the desired outcome.”
We all have a desired outcome in life. The danger is the drift.
The daily steps can never stop, as the drift always lurks.
A great step is to center yourself in the morning. The messages and news of the day flood the screen when you wake up causing the drift to begin. Take time before diving into the current to calibrate, center back on your “why” in life.
Your future self will thank you for the daily steps you take today.
Your spouse, your kids, and your friends will also thank you.
Impact others. Live generously.
