Build optimism

Build optimism this week, it is key to performance.

As told in the book “How Champions Think,“ in the 2012 NCAA Tournament, Kentucky’s Doron Lamb struggled in the semi-final game with poor shooting, only scoring ten points. UK was moving to the championship, and coach Cal knew he had to have Lamb’s outside shooting. He had two days to get his star guard ready.

His normally demanding, difficult practices, turned to praise for Lamb. He repeatedly pumped Doron full of the thoughts, “you are going for 30, you are going to have the best game of your life.” He filled Lamb with optimism, visualizing a victory.

Lamb wasn’t hesitant, quickly nailed his first two shots, and never looked back. He scored 22, and UK won the ’12 championship.

Often in business, we are programmed to emphasize gaps, blind spots, shortcomings, improvement areas, corrections that need to be made. Our business mentality comes across in our families, as we define personality flaws in children and gaps in spouses.

Optimism is a choice. Optimism refocuses one on the blessings of life. Optimism unifies. Optimism attracts.

Drop a note or an email to a co-worker. Praise your teammate for something that happened last week. Let the last words that your child hears before they go to school, be one of praise, highlighting a quality or character trait.

As you fill the halls and houses with optimism, your heart will be filled peace.

“Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.” Zig Ziglar

Impact others. Live generously.
