An Accessible Heart

How would you describe your heart?

Would you talk about what you love? Maybe your passions. “I have a heart for blank.” Maybe toward a person. “My heart is with blank.”

Or, maybe you would tie that question to Scripture. “My heart is deceitfully wicked.” When you think about your heart, you feel guilty.

Maybe, you would mention a company, a mission, an area of the country, all essentially pointing to passion and love for something.

Only one place in the Bible do we hear Jesus describe his own heart.

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”” Matthew‬ ‭11‬:‭28‬-‭30‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Jesus describes his heart as “gentle and lowly.”

Gentle equals meek, not harsh. Ever think of Christ pointing his finger at you? He is meek.

Lowly equals humble for sure, but an equal translation is accessible. Jesus can’t be compared to the person at the party that is unapproachable or the one that commands respect.

The heart of Christ is meek and approachable.

And what is the requirement for approaching him? Anyone who has a burden. Period.

Jesus wants you to find rest. He is meek. He is approachable. And, he wants you to find rest. Jesus Christ’s desire is that you come out of the storm. He wants it more than you.

But, for some reason, our hearts and minds pull us to the storm, to remain in the storm.

Maybe we have lost hope. The belief is that we have moved too far. We see no way out. Well, Jesus is gentle and lowly.

Maybe we believe Jesus is condescending, shaking his head in disappointment. It seems better to remain in the storm. Jesus is gently and lowly.

Maybe we lack humility. Lack of humility will keep you in the storm forever. Jesus is gentle and lowly.

And, the only requirement for coming to Christ is the recognition that you have a burden. He is accessible.

One of the greatest gifts to humanity is that our Savior is accessible. Don’t miss it.

Impact others. Live generously.
