The Un-understable Will

Through the years, the number one thing that I have prayed for is God’s Will for my life and my families life.

Why?

From a truth standpoint, God tells me that “His Will is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2) His will is perfect. There is nothing better. There is no way to improve it. My will for my life is imperfect, leaves much room for improvement.

And, we know “that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28) Again, all things lead to good under His Will. Not some things. Not a few things. But, all things.

Given these truths, of course His Will should be a primary prayer!

I was talking to a friend recently about how words in society take on different meanings. AI was introduced as truly artificial intelligence, but, now, everything claims to have AI or to have been built with AI. Stick AI on a product and sales increase. Algorithm was more of a math term, now that word drives my decisions. A platform was a literal stage, an influencer was a person that influenced a few, toxic was a poison, and on and on. Words take on a different meaning as society evolves.

I believe this has happened with God’s Will.

God’s Will has been defined as a safe zone. In my mind, His will accomplishes my wants and desires. Under His will, I am protected, living on Easy Street, retiring comfortably, almost like life in a safe bubble.

But, this is not how His Will is defined in His Word. Like many words over the past centuries, we have changed the meaning to fit our definition, the one that seems logical.

But, God’s Will, many times, is un-understandable.

His primary will for my life was given to me by Jesus, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:18-20) The Great Commission.

His Will for all the stuff in my life is to accomplish The Great Commission. My job, finances, car, vacation, you name it. If it is God’s Will for my life, it is used to accomplish His mission. This changes the perspective of life. This changes everything.

I often don’t see how, it doesn’t make sense, but He connects the dots. That is His promise. Through the good and the bad, His Will shall come to fruition. We will never be able to exactly see how He is working or how He has worked. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

It is un-understandable.

But, His Will is the most important thing in our lives. Everything in my life, from my job to my finances to the conversations I have today to the decisions I make, everything is used to accomplish His Will.

So, what do we do?

We are to pray and seek His Will. We don’t force or control it. We simply follow His Words that He plainly gave to us. And, His Will will take us to a place that is “good and pleasing and perfect.”

It will certainly look different, but it is perfect. That is His promise.
