Capture the Moments
The book The Power of Moments by Chip Heath and Dan Heath crystalizes the thought that life is made up of moments.
Moments can slow life down.
As child number two headed to college, the inevitable hit me again.
The regular dinner conversations slow down. The face-to-face advice, now limited. The hugs, no longer daily. The dumb dad jokes have no ears to receive. The in-person celebrations of victories, fewer. The long discussions during the tough times, mostly by phone now. The cheerleading from the stands, all over. The vacation drives in the car, full of excitement, drawing to a close. The busyness, the hustling and bustling around town, now calm. The beautiful noise in the house, none to be found. The sounds of the kids hanging together, laughing together, arguing, not anymore.
Time flies. The danger is that we jump into the river of routine and let the current carry us where it may.
But every single day has a moment. A pivotal point in time where you can celebrate, recognize, find joy. That moment where you can slow down time and recognize the quality of a person, the job that person is doing, the monumental task that was delivered, the love that was shown in the family. That moment where you focus and celebrate another, be it a note, a text, in a public forum, or at a dinner conversation.
Moments make a family, a marriage, a company, a team, a friendship. And moments can pause life for a second and grow joy in the journey.
