How can this be?
The question that can bring peace.
Nicodemus was a Jewish leader and scholar. Out of all the people in and around Jerusalem that day, he was the one that approached Jesus. He didn’t go to one of the disciples that were with Christ. Rather, Nicodemus went directly to the source. He went to Jesus. After Christ talked to him about being born again, Nicodemus had an honest question.
“How can these things be?”
A very logical question. The things that Jesus was saying made no sense from a human standpoint. Christ was explaining how to have eternal life, and it was impossible to believe without the gift of faith.
Jesus answered the question by pointing to Himself. How can this be? Only by Jesus was the answer.
The question of Nicodemus is still the question we should ask today.
“How can this be?”
The answer reveals dependence.
One answer reveals dependence on yourself. My hard work, my wise decisions, my efforts. Or, my mistakes, my faults, my issues. The dependence on oneself robs fulfillment, steals peace, offers no security.
As Nicodemus learned, the other direction, reveals dependence on Christ.
How can this be? Because of Him, I am where I am. Because of Him, I am who I am. He has brought me here, given me what I have, and has a future for me. He brings fulfillment, peace and security.
How we answer this question today reveals dependence and drives allegiance.
So, today, remove the pressure or glory from yourself. Glorify Him.
When you answer the question with a dependence on Christ, a grateful heart naturally follows. The perfect place to be on Thanksgiving.
