God is Loyal
As Abraham was getting older, naturally, his thoughts were on the wife of his son, Isaac. God had told Abraham that Isaac was the one that would carry on the covenant (Matthew 17:19).
With this on his mind, Abraham called on his loyal helper, a man that was in charge of all he had. He was a man Abraham could trust with the most important of missions.
And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his household, who had charge of all that he had.” Genesis 24:2.
Abraham tells the servant to leave Canaan, go back to his homeland, and find a wife for Isaac. After some questions to make sure that he understands the task at hand, the trusted servant is on it. It is estimated that he had to travel over 500 miles to find Isaac’s wife. Monumental task, but the impossibility of the endeavor mattered not to the servant. The loyalty of the servant was driven by the loyal one that was in control.
The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father’s house and from the land of my kindred, and who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘To your offspring I will give this land,’ he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. Genesis 24:7
Abraham and his trusted servant knew that they served a loyal God. And, when he reaches Abraham’s homeland, he calls on God to help, and, within minutes, Rebekah, Isaac’s future wife, is found at the watering well.
God orchestrated all the events in the story of Isaac and Rebekah in Genesis 24. He is loyal. Where He leads, rest assured His promises will come to fruition, always. This truth is prevalent through history, through scripture, and will be true in the future.
Knowing the loyalty of God, frees us to be loyal ourselves. There is a security that God provides that allows loyalty to be unlocked. There is great freedom in know that He is ultimately in control.
Loyalty seems to be a lacking quality in our culture today. I wonder if the lack of loyalty points to the forgotten loyalty of God? With no loyalty, division rages.
