The Anchor (not my book)

“I still can’t believe this happened in the US.”

This was today’s headline in a daily email that I received this morning. Welcome to 2021, everyone.

In my book, The Anchor, I wrote the following, long before COVID by the way.

And, I suppose that my future will be the same. Many uncontrollables lie ahead for me. Many abrupt currents and changing tides are coming my way. However, with my anchor, I am now prepared to face the future. No matter the situation, the abrupt twist, the unforecasted storm, I can cling to my anchor to steady the ship.

The same will be true for you. Events are coming that will rock your world. Money, friends, faith, self-created gods, personal relationships, popularity, business, athletic prowess—nothing in this world will provide stability. You need an anchor that will steady the ship.

In a world of uncertainty, with many uncontrollable situations coming our way, I hope that you begin to discover the anchor that is there for you, the anchor of your soul.

I think yesterday could be described as one of those “events that will rock your world.” Really, the last 11 months, and it has only been 11 months, can be described as a series of “events that will rock your world.”

There is a saying to only worry about what you can control. Well, the truth is that we do not control much. Uncontrollables wreck our “controllables.” Example. Do you control your business or your job? Not really. World events can change that overnight. Read through the businesses that went bankrupt in 2020 (J. Crew, Neiman Marcus, Gold’s Gym, and on and on and on.). What about your health? The health of your family? Your money? Wonder what the market is going to do over the next month?

There is nothing in this world to cling to when the water of life gets rough. Nothing. God, The Anchor, offers the only security. And, God’s promises steady the ship.

There are probably a few different groups of people in the rough water right now. Speaking from experience, I have found myself in each group at different times in my life. Those that are holding on to The Anchor, knowing His promises (the Bible) are true. Or, maybe, those that used to hold on that are reaching to grab that Anchor right now. When I went to church the Sunday after 9/11, I had to walk a mile to get in the building. And, finally, those that are riding the rough water out on their own. The “this, too, shall pass” mentality. This will absolutely pass, until the next uncontrollable comes along. For everyone, the water will continue to be rough. The events yesterday are now past us (I guess), but another one awaits.

The great news is that there is an Anchor for our soul that provides stability, security, consistency, and deliverance. The Anchor is available, equally, to each group above no matter when you begin to hold on to it.

I speak from experience. The Anchor is my story of how God steadied my ship and continues to steady my ship. I wanted my kids to know through my life experiences that there is only one anchor that steadies the ship. Not money or material possessions. Not relationships. Not religion or church. Just Him and His book of promises, the only truth that exists, that stands the test of time. Choose the Bible over my book if you are looking for a good read.
