The moment

The moment will come….

J’Wan Roberts, a six year senior for Houston, stepped to the line and hit the game tying and game winning free throws with 19 seconds left against the certain eventual National champions, Duke Blue Devils.

“Just trusting my work. I shoot 150 free throws every day before I finish practice. I have a manager with me, or a coach, that shoots with me everyday until I make 150,” Roberts said. “Being in this moment, I feel like I was ready for it. I was built for it. I try not to get sidetracked by everything. Just trusting in my work and believing.”

Why was he ready?

Because he shoots 150 free throws every day. When he arrived at the moment, he was ready. He simply did what he does every day. The moment was a natural emulation of his daily discipline.

The moment will come in your life, too.

When we think of the moment, we naturally think about the game winning play, the big presentation, or that pressure-packed meeting.

But, in reality, the moment won’t be so dramatic. No crowd watching. No championship on the line. No extreme intensity.

Actually, the most important moment will come in the quiet. The moment will be the action or decision you make in the dark. The situation where you have to make the call. And, no one will be watching.

In this moment, your personal values guide you. You either live them or you don’t. No grey area. And, your prior discipline takes over.

A values-driven life is built by the foundational bricks of small daily decisions, the work you put in to living what you believe.

Then, when the big moment comes, the decision will have been made long ago, as your values guided your life.

And, the moment is never played out in a silo. The moment’s decision will absolutely impact others. Companies, teams, families, spouses, friends.

Take care of your daily decisions today.

And, remember grace, especially for yourself. We all get a reset each day.

Impact others. Live generously.
